Headingley, Leeds are set to host the third and final ENG vs SA ODI game of the three-game series on July 24, Sunday. This game also culminates the ODI series as it now moves to the three-game T20I series from July 28 in Cardiff. England lost a T20I series and an ODI series before the series against South Africa. The Proteas also lost a T20I series they played against India earlier this year.
Although this ODI series is not part of the ICC ODI Super League, ASC Selectors Chairman Victor Mpitsang said this is an important series looking forward to their 50 preparations for the World Cup in India next year. The team is also without regular skipper Temba Bavuma, who is yet to recover from the elbow injury he suffered against India.
“While the ODI series is not about Super League points, the 50+ format is vitally important as we look to the 2023 ICC World Cup in India. The combinations tried and the performances we achieved will greatly contribute to our preparation for this tournament.” declared the president of the CSA selectors, Victor Mpitsang.
England, on the other hand, have yet to recover from the sudden retirement of Ben Stokes. He scored just 5 in his last ODI rounds for his side. However, his impact as a white-ball cricketer will endure and inspire the rest of the players. The hosts are also without Eoin Morgan, their former skipper who also recently announced his international retirement.
