Met Eireann Ireland weather forecast warns of widespread frost and ice as temperatures drop below zero

Ireland is about to shiver as the freezing temperatures will bring widespread frost and ice.

The mercury will drop to -3 degrees over the weekend.

Today will start cold with a touch of frost in some areas. It will be a mostly dry day with periods of spring sunshine.

But the West and South West will see showers which will spread across the Midlands by evening.

Temperatures will remain between 7 and 10 degrees.

Widespread frost is expected this evening as temperatures drop to -2 degrees with a mix of clear spells and some showers, the showers will mainly affect the Midlands, South and West.

Tomorrow will be a bright and cool day with frost clearing in sunny spells and well scattered showers with temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees.

It will be a cold and frosty night with some patches of ice as the mercury drops down to -3 degrees, but it will be mostly dry with long clear spells and just the chance of an isolated downpour.

Here is the forecast for the rest of the weekend:

Saturday

“Saturday is expected to be a dry and beautiful spring day with long spells of sunshine. After a cold and frosty start, afternoon highs will be between 7 and 10 degrees in moderate northeasterly winds.

“Cold and mostly dry Saturday evening with just the possibility of isolated showers along the east and southeast coasts. Lows of -3 to +3 degrees, coldest in the west of the country with frost and ice cream.

Sunday

“A few showers from the east on Sunday but overall fairly dry weather with some clearings. Maximum temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in a moderate east or southeast wind.

“Another chilly Sunday evening with clear spells and only a few showers. Lowest temperatures of zero to +3 degrees with a moderate breeze from the southeast.

Monday

“A cold, windy day Monday with lots of cloud and scattered patches of rain or drizzle, mostly affecting southern and western counties. Highs of 6 to 9 degrees in cool, gusty winds from the South East.

“Monday evening rain will spread across the country from the Atlantic and it will be very windy. Low temperatures of 3-6 degrees in strong, gusty winds from the southeast.”
