Weather forecast causing some schools to close today | News, Sports, Jobs


NEW ULM – A National Weather Service (NWS) forecast of heavy snowfall from midnight Thursday evening through tonight (Friday) prompted a number of schools to announce on Thursday that they would be closing today.

Sleepy Eye Public Schools announced that they are closing today due to inclement weather and will be hosting a digital (learning) day. Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s School will also be closed today.

New Ulm Public Schools had no classes scheduled for today, according to the school calendar. A staff workshop is scheduled for the day.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran, New Ulm Area Catholic Schools and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop announced later that afternoon that they would be closed today.

With the threat of wintry weather approaching Friday, several Friday area games have been moved to Thursday.

The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for snow that could be heavy at times, with scattered blowing snow after 3 p.m. A further 5 to 9 inches of snowfall was possible during the day, with another inch possible overnight.
