Monday (August 1)

  • Heavy to very heavy rains are likely in isolated locations in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahé.
  • Heavy rains are possible in isolated locations in Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Rayalaseema and southern interior of Karnataka.
  • Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds (speed reaching 30 to 40 km/h) were forecast in isolated places on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and with lightning in isolated places on Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahé and Lakshadweep.

Tuesday (August 2)

  • Heavy to very heavy rains with extremely heavy falls in isolated places are forecast in Kerala, Mahe.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated locations was forecast over northern interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
  • Heavy rains in isolated locations are expected over Uttarakhand, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Rayalaseema, Coastal Karnataka, Southern Interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep.
  • Thunderstorms with gusty winds (speed reaching 40-50 km/h) are likely in isolated locations on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and with lightning in isolated locations on Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Coastal Pradesh, Yanam, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahé and Lakshadweep.

Summary of forecasts for the next five days

Four-day precipitation accumulation from Monday to Wednesday

The western end of the Monsoon Trough lies north of its normal position while the eastern end passes near the foothills of the Himalayas. It is very likely to be north of its normal position or along the foothills of the Himalayas over the next two days, with the eastern end likely to move south thereafter. Additionally, a western disturbance extends over neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan, while a north-south trough extends from southern Chhattisgarh to the Comorin region through Telangana, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu. The combination of these systems and a shear zone likely to develop over southernmost peninsular India from Tuesday will likely result in the following weather events this week.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy falls accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is very likely over Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal Ganges, Uttarakhand and East Uttar Pradesh through Tuesday and on Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, Odisha on Monday, Thursday and Friday, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh until Wednesday, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura until Friday.

Isolated very heavy rains were also forecast for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya on Monday, while fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls and thunderstorms with lightning are forecast for Telangana from Wednesday to Friday, the coast and northern interior of Karnataka and Lakshadweep from Tuesday to Friday, southern interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahé until Friday, and on Rayalaseema until Tuesday.

Isolated very heavy rains were also forecast over the coast and northern interior of Karnataka from Tuesday to Friday, Kerala and Mahe until Friday, southern interior of Karnataka on Thursday and Friday, and over the Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Karaikal from Tuesday to Friday.

Finally, isolated extremely heavy rains are also likely over Kerala and Mahé from Tuesday to Thursday.
