It will be windy today, especially in the afternoon.
Today will be windy with the wind blowing from the southwest and west across the country and people should stay alert when traveling. Yellow warnings are in place for many parts of the country. Fortunately, this is not a forecast for summer, says Einar Sveinbjörnsson, a meteorologist working for Vegagerðin.
“The wind is going to be strong today and it can be quite tricky especially as there are a lot of people on the roads. A depression is passing over the country and brings with it a gust of wind from the southwest. ”
Most of the winds will be in the southwestern part of the country and in the western part. There will be strong gusts of wind, especially near the mountains and in the highlands, but there the wind strength will be less.
The coming weekend looks better
“Then there are some bad spots, like by Vík in Mýrdal where there will be strong gusts of wind around noon and a bit further east of Skaftafell between Fagurhólsmýri and Jökulsárlón. This kind of windy weather is difficult for the travelers on the road, not just those towing trailers or caravans.” He adds that the worst weather will be between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. today.
Winds from this direction may mean that roads around Akureyri will be impacted and people should take particular care if driving in the area today. “The wind is also quite strong on Holtavörðuheiði and in Skagafjörður,” he says, but less strong gusts.
The weather forecast for the weekend is looking better, he said. But as a general rule, it’s always good to be cautious when strong gusts of wind are forecast and to wait. However, the weekend will be good, especially in the northern part of Iceland and in the east, but maybe not so good in the south and west of the country. However, the overall weather will be milder this weekend than the previous one.
